In 2016 LaMalfa made a statement on the CBS Local Sacramento station in which he disagreed with the water management of the Army Corps of Engineers, who are educated and trained in the field of dam and Water Management. LaMalfa said, "Until this Lake hits 900 ft, which is full elevation, and until Shasta hits 1067, I'm not going to be completely happy because that means mismanagement of water supply." LaMalfa demanded Lake Oroville be filled to the brim even though he understood there could be a catastrophic failure. LaMalfa knew the possibility of the emergency spillway failure 12 years ago but didn't work to fund repairs.
